Customers look for 3 things when they come to your website

  • you make effective use of their time
  • you make it easy for them to understand why they should do business with you
  • you make it easy for them to contact you
Here are 10 tips to help you communicate effectively with your customers :

Who should do business with you ?
Define the groups of people who will benefit from your products or services. This makes it easier for your target customers to identify with your offerings and your company.

What are the products/services you offer and how can they benefit the prospect ?
The most important thing to put across is what’s in it for your customers. So spell out the benefits of your products. You could have a section called "20 uses" where prospects can find different suggestions on how to use the products.

  Let them know about add-ons
Think creatively of ways for your customers to buy additional products to go with their original purchase. You could offer several products that go together as one value-added package, at a lower price than it would cost to buy them separately.

Why they should do business with you
Highlight the qualities that make your customers want to do business with you such as :

  • your personal touch that guarantees confidentiality of your customers business
  • your 24-hours technical support
  • your professionalism
  • your flexible business hours

  Show them how
Customers use the internet to find information and learn new things. Showing them how your product works not only fills that learning need but also makes it clear how your products benefit them.

Show how others have used it
Use case studies to be specific about what you can do for your client. Show how you find solutions to your customers’ problems. As far as possible use their own words if they provide testimonies. Even better, state their contact information if you have their permission to do so - it makes their testimonies more credible.

  Attract attention through education
This is called the soft-sell approach. Provide useful information related to your industry so that you can establish yourself as the expert. Create an online newsletter about your industry’s developments and send via email to those who sign up for it Provide "how-to" tutorials or articles, not necessarily about your products, but relevant to the interests of your potential customers

  Give them the facts
A lot of money is spent on marketing to induce a customer to call and yet when they do, they’re placed on hold or there’s no one there to answer the phone. Place a Frequently Asked Questions section on your website that can answer most of the basic questions a potential customer might ask. They can make an informed decision by getting all the facts and this can actually speed up the sales process.

  What’s your slogan ?
Who can forget lines like, "Don’t leave home without it" or "Got milk ?" A slogan distinguishes your company from the rest of the competitors - it helps people to remember you if it’s catchy and memorable. Place the slogan prominently on your homepage.

Bundle your services as training and seminars
If your products and services are hard to understand or involves a substantial financial investment, package free seminars and training with it. Your website can b easily updated to highlight programs being offered and training schedules. You can even place express sign-up forms online which beats having to mail or fax application forms.
